You are looking at an identified photograph of ELIZABETH WHITMAN STRAW, born 1834, Pa., to JOHN WHITMAN & CATHERINE MESSNER.
The photograph measures about 4x6 and it is in fair shape with some fading & dirty spots (see scans).
There is writing on the front and back of the photo. The front says, "Elizabeth" and "Grandma Straw" and I think the back says "Mr. Irvin Straw" then there is some additional writing that I can't make out (see scan). I believe IRVIN STRAW was her son who was born November 8, 1872, PA.
I did a little research on this family and this is what I've come up with:
ELIZABETH WHITMAN was born on December 8, 1834, PA. to JOHN WHITMAN (1800-1884) & CATHERINE MESSNER (abt. 1805-aft. 1880)
ELIZABETH married LEVI STRAW (3/1833-1909) on July 31, 1857, JACKSON TWP., DAUPHIN CO., PA.
LEVI STRAW was born Oct. 15, 1831, PA.., & he died April 4, 1909, PA
LEVI & ELIZABETH had 6 children:
ISAAC HENRY STRAW (1857-1935)
MARY C. STRAW (1859-1936), (see photo of her listed separately, she looks just like her mother)
JOHN A. STRAW (1867-?)
WILLIAM D. STRAW (1870-?)
IRVIN LEVI STRAW (1873-?)
MILTON BENJAMIN STRAW (1861-?) (see photo of his daughter JENNIE MAY STRAW, listed separately).
ELIZABETH WHITMAN STRAW died February 21, 1916, probably Dauphin Co., Pa. and she is buried in HALIFAX METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY.
After LEVI'S death, it appears that ELIZABETH lived out her years with her son ISAAC H. and his family in Halifax, Dauphin Co., Pa.
ELIZABETH'S daughter, MARY CATHERINE "KATE" STRAW SHOTT moved to DEKALB, ILL., with her husband HENRY J. SHOTT, prior to 1900, there is a photograph of Mary Catherine "Kate" Straw Shott & I also have a photo of her daughter BERTHA M. SHOTT McDIRMID.
When I supply the genealogy with these photos, it is only my intention to try and help a family researcher figure out if indeed this is one of their family members. Although I strive to get the information as accurate as possible, I am sure that there are some details that are not exactly correct but I'm confident that I do have the family connections correct or I would not list them.
