You are looking at an identified photo of JOSEPH FLETCHER SICKEL (1835-1899), husband of ELIZABETH TOBIN & son to JOHN W. SICKEL and I believe his mother died prior to the 1850 census.
This photo is in nice shape with some issues (see scans) and it measures about 4x6.
The back of the photograph indicates as such:
"Joseph F. Sickel, School Teacher, John Marshall School" and then just below that is a sticker saying "Joseph F. Sickel and return to Mrs. Creighton."
I have done a little research on this photo and this is what I've found:
According to an obituary that I found online, J. FLETCHER SICKEL was born August 1834 and he died March 5, 1899 (per death certificate) of Brights Disease aka Kidney Disease, he is buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery with his wife ELIZABETH.
Someone has added ELIZABETHS burial information to FINDAGRAVE.COM, her memorial number is 52986520.
In some google publications online, Joseph is listed as the principal of the JEFFERSON GRAMMER SCHOOL (for boys), Fifth Street above Poplar, Philadelphia, Pa. One article that I read indicates that JOHN SICKEL was the principal of JEFFERSON GRAMMER SCHOOL for over 25 years and then his son JOSEPH assumed his position as principal and held this position for over 30 years.
JOSEPH F. SICKEL married ELIZABETH TOBIN sometime around 1857, their son JOHN was born around 1858.
JOSEPH & ELIZABETH had the following children: JOHN, JOSEPH F. JR., IDA.
JOSEPH FLETCHER SICKEL had the following siblings: WILLIAM born 1837, SIMON born 1842, JANE born 1836 and MARY born 1843 (see 1850 census records).
JOSEPH'S father is listed as a school teacher in this census record and there is no mother in the home which leads me to believe she died sometime between 1843 & 1850. JOHN SICKEL (father) married a woman by the name of ELIZABETH sometime between 1850-1860.
More on JOSEPH FLETCHER SICKEL, JR.: He was born March 1862 and died April 5, 1903 of Diabetis and at the time of his death he was a salesman, he is buried in Chelton Hills Cemetery. JOSEPH married LOUISA F. (born Dec. 1861) circa 1886 (per 1900 census) and they had children: IRENE F. born Nov. 1887, CARRIE E. born Dec. 1888, IDA M. born May 1893 and WILLIAM F. born March 14, 1896. (see 1900 census) and he died August 1973, Cape May, NJ. (see S.S. Death Index) NOTE: On his WWII Draft Reg. Card he lists a KATHRYN P. SICKEL (same address) as his contact person.
According to the 1910 Philadelphia Census, after JOSEPH dies, you can find LOUISE, IDA M. & WILLIAM F. living with EZRA B. HAND (AGE 48). LOUISE & EZRA are both listed as widowed. NOTE: She is lived as SICKEL not HAND.
In 1920 LOUISA is still living with EZRA HAND, as a boarder, IDA & WILLIAM are still living at home.
In 1930 WILLIAM F. SICKEL had been married and he now has 2 children living with him, GRACE, age 8 & RALPH, age 6 along with his mother LOUISA now 68 and his sister IDA M. now 35. The census indicates that he is still married but his wife is not present in the home. It indicates he married abt. 1921 and per his WWII Reg. Card his wife may have been named Kathryn P.
