You are looking at an identified photograph of WILLIAM WELLONS HINES, taken NORFOLK, VA. This photograph is in very nice shape but it is dirty (see scans). The photo measures about 4x6 and it is identified on the back as such WM. WELLONS HINES.

I have done some research on this photograph and this is what I've come up with. WILLIAM WELLONS HINES was born October 18, 1870 and he died January 13, 1903. WILLIAM was the son of THOMAS HAMLIN HINES born October 11, 1845 & FLORIDA "FLORINE" AUGUSTA WELLONS born June 23, 1852. WILLIAM had 4 siblings: LALLA COLGATE HINES born July 1872 (died 1877)LEWIS A., born 1874, VIVIA born 1876 (died 1877) and VICTOR born 1876 (died 1877). I found VICTOR, VIVIA and LALLA in the below listed burial records for NORFOLK, VA. and it looks like VICTOR and VIVIA were twins that died the same year. Something bad must have swept through that house in 1877, because it looks like at least 3 of the children died that year.

I found no records to indicate that WILLIAM WELLONS HINES married. The NORFOLK, VA., Directory for 1888-1891 indicates that WILLIAM'S occupation was a photographer at 273 MAIN ST., NORFOLK, VA. The burial records indicate that he died January 1903, however, I've tried every combination of names, dates, places that I can think of and I was still not able to find him in the 1900 census records.

After WILLIAMS'S father died, his mother FLORINE remarried a man by the name of HENRY W. BREWER born March 1837, Dictrict of Columbia. In 1900, HENRY & FLORINE were living in the District of Columbia with her son LOUIS A. born January 1874. VA. WILLIAM is not living with them so it's presumed that he stayed in NORFOLK, however, we know from cemetery records he died 3 years after the 1900 census.

WILLIAM'S father THOMAS HAMLIN HINES died December 21, 1884. THOMAS was the son of DR. THOMAS COLGATE and SARAH AUGUSTA EPPES HINES.

WILLIAM'S mother FLORINE AUGUSTA WELLONS HINES BREWER died OCTOBER 27, 1906 and she was the daughter of DR. WILLIAM BROCK WELLONS and SARAH S. LEWIS WELLONS.

If you copy and paste the below listed link into your browser, you can view a transcription of CEDAR HILL CEMETERY, SUFFOLK, VA. were most of them appear to be buried.

Below is some Military Records that I found for WILLIAM'S father THOMAS HAMLIN HINES.

Thomas Hamlin Hines
16th Virginia Infantry, Company B, Private
Hines was born in 1845 son of Dr. Thomas Colgate and Sarah
Augusta Eppes Hines. He married Florine Augusta Wellons and was
postmaster of Suffolk after the war. He died December 21, 1884
and is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Block C, Lot 64. After his
death, his wife became postmaster and later married a Mr. Brewer.

Below is some information that I found on FLORINE'S father DR. WILLIAM BROCK WELLONS:

William Brock Wellons
CSA Chaplain
Dr. Wellons was born in Sussex County in November 9, 1821. He
married Sarah Lewis. Wellons was the founder of the Suffolk
Christian Church, the Oakland Christian, Berea Christian and the
Bethlehem Christian Church in Suffolk, Virginia and was their
minister for many years. Rev. Wellons held every prominent office
in the Southern Christian Conference. He published The Christian
Sun from 1855 to 1877. Wellons helped establish the Farmers Bank
of Nansemond and the Suffolk Collegiate Institute. He was an
advocate for the Public markethouse. He died February 16, 1877
and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery Block C, Lot 64.

This photograph came with a group of other photos that belong to the May Family of LOUISBURG, FRANKLIN CO., NORTH CAROLINA.

I am currently trying to figure out just how the HINES FAMILY of NORFOLK, VA., fits in with the MAY FAMILY of Franklin Co., North Carolina. Once I've figured that out, I will be posting the remainder of the photos.
